Alexandra Burke trounced by Whitney and Cheryl
Monday, 19th October 2009.
Cheryl Cole and Whitney Houston's appearance on last night's X Factor drew in more viewers than when Alexandra Burke won the show.
Nearly 15 million viewers tuned into the live Sunday night results show to make it the most watched episode in X Factor history.
Ratings for the show hit 14.8 million - a few hundred thousand more than the 14.6 million who saw Alexandra Burke crowned the winner of X Factor's sixth series last December.
Having two huge exclusives on yesterday's show certainly helped draw viewers.
The first was judge Cheryl Cole performing her debut solo single "Fight For This Love" after a week of intense speculation about whether she'd be singing live.
It certainly looked like the she was, and even Simon Cowell gave her credit, saying: "It's really going to pain me to have to say this, but that was an incredible routine, great performance and unfortunately you're going to be number one next week."
Exclusive number two
Exclusive number two was Whitney Houston's first live UK performance in over a decade. After years in the pop wilderness, the diva performed comeback track "Million Dollar Bill."
But whilst her performance was up to scratch, the mid-song snapping of a dress strap distracted her a little.
"I sang myself out of my dress," she joked at the end, before seeming a little nervous when put on the spot by host Dermot O'Leary.
When he asked her what she thought of the contestants, she paused before saying: "I thought that they were, how do I put this really good... They're young. They have a lot of room to grow. And like Clive (Davis) told me, practice, practice, practice."
Hmm really supportive there Whitney!
But she and Cole nevertheless helped the show attain record viewing figures and for that alone, producers will be smiling.
Michael Bublé and Westlife will sing live during next weekend's Big Band Week.
