Joe McElderry - X Factor 2009
Wednesday, 7th October 2009.
Joe McElderry must have thought all his Christmases had come at once when it was revealed fellow Geordie Cheryl Cole would be the one to decide if he made it to the live finals.
The 18 year-old from South Shields left more than an impression on last year's winning judge during his audition and Cole admitted that she felt like she knew him throughout the process.
Joe's already been nicknamed the ‘South Shields stud’ and is tipped to pick up votes from the girls when the voting begins.
Karaoke star
The student from South Shields first picked up a microphone when playing with a karaoke machine a few years ago.
His singing gradually improved so in 2007, Joe - who still lives with his family in the North East - decided to enter The X Factor, doing exceptionally well to reach Bootcamp at the age of 16.
But it didn't quite feel right for him - he felt he was too young and wanted more experience and so made the tough decision to leave the competition.
After walking out of Bootcamp, he landed roles in a few local musicals and finished 3rd in regional singing competition 'Music Means Life' in 2008.
Joe also won 'performer of the year' at the 'Pride of Tyneside' competition, so he's no stranger to singing live.
But The X Factor is the big one and he'd trade everything in to be this year's Alexandra Burke.
