Diana Vickers falls at final hurdle
Sunday, 7th December 2008.
We have our X Factor finalists... but sadly for Diana Vickers fans the 17 year-old is not one of them.
The Accrington singer was hotly fancied to take this year's X Factor crown at the start of the competition, but has had a dodgy few weeks.
First it was her no-show during Mariah Carey week, with Laryngitis to blame for Diana being unable to sing.
But there was a bit of controversy as some of the behind-the-scenes footage from the finalists' mid-week goings on showed Diana in high spirits, shouting and having fun at a fireworks display.
So surely her throat can't have been that bad?
Then it was Diana's big comeback, a week later, where her distinctly ropey version of Coldplay's "Yellow" led Simon Cowell to admit he didn't think she had quite recovered from her illness.
But her fans stuck by her, until what was possibly her best week of the series last night.
So with the phone lines closed, it was left to Dermot O'Leary to announce the three lucky finalists.
JLS was the first act through to the final, then a relieved Alexandra, before the shocking announcement that Eoghan had made it through too.
Based on the night's performances, it was Eoghan who probably deserved the boot.
But lo, it was Diana's turn to sing on the X Factor for the last ever time, as a devastated Eoghan looked-on.
The young Irish lad had become Diana's closest friend during the show, and tearfully told him after she'd sung: "I know you can win it".
Can he win it?
With Eoghan, JLS and Alexandra battling it out next week, it looks to be the most open X Factor final ever.
So who knows who'll take the crown?
