Daniel Evans finally gets his marching orders
Sunday, 16th November 2008.
With most of the nation wondering how Daniel Evans was still in the competition leading up to the X Factor's sixth week, there was no surprise as he finally got the boot.
Likened by the judges to a pub singer rather than a potential pop prince, Daniel lasted longer in this year's show than hot favourite Laura White, to the surprise of everyone involved with the show.
But Simon Cowell's prediction that the widower couldn’t win the show "in a million years" came true.... at last.
It was the X Factor's "Best of British" week, with the show's weaker all-round singers Daniel and Rachel Hylton failing to wow the judges and public alike.
Both belonging to Dannii’s over 25 category, both having performed in previous sing-offs, it was going to be a tough decision for the judges.
Daniel sang an expectedly emotionally-charged Bridge Over Troubled Water, but was slightly outdone by Rachel with U2's One Love, a truly magnificent vocal.
The rapturous applause the mum-of-five received meant the writing looked on the wall for Danny even before Louis Walsh, Cheryl Cole and Simon Cowell chose to save her.
But she must have felt a little uneasy as Cheryl said: "To be fair Daniel you chose are really good song tonight and sang it well, whereas Rachel, you had a beautiful song to sing and you kind of threw it away a bit."
But with regret she eventually sent Daniel home, leaving Dannii Minogue without the thankless task of having to vote-off one of her own acts.
But having been in the bottom two twice, surely it can't be long until it's three times unlucky for Rachel.
We'll see next week, but in the meantime, say goodbye to Daniel, a true X Factor gentleman.
