No this isn't a mistake, Laura White is out
Sunday, 9th November 2008.
If you thought Austin being booted off X Factor last week was a shock then this week's result was practically heart-stopping as favourite Laura White was shown the door.
The Bolton babe was bizarrely in the bottom two with Ruth Lorenzo despite a captivating performance of Mariah Carey's Endless love - in which she even played the piano.
Even Ruth didn't deserve to have to sing for survival after her faultless version of Carey's My All.
But alas, the two acts hotly tipped for the chop - Daniel and his powerless wailings and Rachel Hylton with a disastrously off-key turn - were saved by the public.
As Dermot O'Leary revealed it would be the two least-likely acts having to sing off, Ruth, who'd been in the bottom two once before, said "I've chosen a great song called Knocking on Heaven's Door - it's my favourite".
Laura admitted she was "Shocked and gutted", before announcing "I'm singing a song called Somewhere over the Rainbow - it's for my granddad".
But surely the X Factor had seen a series-worth of emotional sing offs after Daniel's song for his dead wife a few weeks earlier... so perhaps it wasn't a good move.
Nonetheless, both sing-off performances had all the hallmarks of a potential champion, yet one was about to leave the competition for good.

Cheryl Cole, as Laura's mentor, unsurprisingly said, "This is no option for me I'm going to have to send home Ruth".
Dannii Minogue, as Ruth's mentor, said: "It's been such a tense night tonight and everyone did brilliantly. Doing Mariah Carey week. You two pulled off beautiful performances. Laura knows I think she is the over 25's main competition, but I have to send home Laura".
Simon Cowell said: "You were not the worst two singers tonight. I don't know what went wrong tonight, it was a joke. You both sang your hearts out - I like both girls. I'm going to send home Laura".
And with the deciding vote, Louis said: "Dermot, it goes to show the high standard this year that sing-off was unbelievable. It’s a really difficult job".
"Both have a lot more to give I loved their second songs more than their first. I have to pick someone who has the most fight left in her".
"Dermot, the person I'm sending home tonight - regrettably - is Laura."
What a shock!
But even the least cynical viewers must have toyed with the thought that Louis and Simon were getting rid of the competition to clear a path to the final for their acts JLS and Eoghan.
