Bad news for Bad Lashes on X Factor
Saturday, 11th October 2008
Bad Lashes lost a battle of the X Factor girl groups tonight to become the first act to be voted off the live finals.
The Geordie babes received the joint fewest public votes along with sexy Bristol-based group Girlband meaning two out of Louis Walsh's three acts were forced into a nail-biting sing-off before facing the judges' wrath.
In a twist to this year's X Factor live finals, acts having to sing for survival in the sing-off don't have to perform the song they did earlier in the show.
Instead they are allowed to sing any song they choose so they can demonstrate to the judges that they have what it takes to remain in the X Factor.
Camp but solid
Girlband opened the show with a camp but solid version of Bananarama's Venus, which received little criticism from the judges as they overcame the difficult task of performing first on the night.
But in the dance-off they formed a huddle and sang an emotional version of Dionne Warwick classic That's What Friends Are For .

Bad Lashes, meanwhile, originally sang Roxette's It Must Have Been Love... and performed it well despite a decidedly shaky, out-of-tune opening.
Their song of choice in the dance-off was a harmonious version of Oasis's Wonderwall.

Here's what the judges thought, and who they decided to send home:
Simon Cowell: "I thought they were both shocking to be honest. But the band I'm sending home is Bad Lashes."
Cheryl Cole: "This is an awful choice. I've got a lot of respect for both of you for what you've done tonight but I'm going to send home Girlband."
Dannii Minogue: "Do I have to? The act I will send home is Girlband."
Louis Walsh: "I don't want to lose any of my bands tonight, and I'm loyal to both of them, so as one of them has got two votes I'm going to make it go to the public vote so I'll say Bad Lashes."
Judges votes were tied
As judges votes were tied, the group that received the fewest public votes out of the two of them was given the boot.
That group was Bad Lashes, who all instantly broke down as the heartbreak of being the first act voted off the show set in.
When the result was announced Louis Walsh said: "I'm devastated for the girls because they had so much more to give and they proved it by doing Wonderwall. It was amazing."
