JLS - X Factor 2008
Monday, 6th October 2008
JLS are a London-based foursome made-up of four chirpy lads aged 20-23. Let's discover a bit more about the JLS boys.
Born in South-East London, Marvin Humes started singing at the age of five before attending a professional performance school 3 times a week whilst attending a regular school for his education.
After school, Marvin joined a band called VS, managed by Blue singer Simon Webbe.
But even though they supported Blue on two national tours, the band folded and Marvin contemplated leaving the music industry.
He moved abroad and started selling property and land before receiving a call from current bandmate Ortise to ask him to join JLS. And he jumped at the chance.
Also jumping at the chance to join JLS was Jonathan Gill, known as JB.
JB sang all through school and studied at The Centre for Young Musicians (CYM) but almost gave up music due to the pressures from the school to concentrate on his promising rugby career.
But good old Ortise got in touch whilst 17 year-old JB was on a year break from university getting singing lessons and asked him to join JLS. He never looked back either.
Ortise Williams has pulled all the strings to form JLS. The 21 year-old has been singing since he was at school in Nigeria and used to teach the children in local villages to sing.
Oritse sang in a recording studio there too but due to competition from another male solo artist, a track Oritse wanted to do well was pulled from the stations playlist and his dream came to a standstill.

Undeterred, Ortise moved to the UK to live with his mother in London and was introduced to a variety of different mentors when he joined a vocal academy whilst he was studying at university.
He then came up with the idea to form JLS and did a bit of ringing around to recruit his new bandmates.
The last one to join the band was Aston Merrygold, a Peterborough lad who was originally tipped to be a football star.
He represented England for the European Youth Games in 2004 but retired soon after discovering he had a nerve disorder in his left foot.
Aston was very musical through school and met bandmate Marvin whilst auditioning for a TV advert, who invited him to come along and try out for JLS.
Since joining the band, Aston moved to London to be closer to the other members of JLS.
