Rachel Hylton - X Factor 2008
Monday, 6th October 2008
Rachel Hylton, a 26 year-old mum-of-five from South East London is hoping the X Factor will be the key to her finally getting control of her life.
The oldest of three children, Rachel has always had the dream to be a singer but after her parents split up when she was just nine years old, she went off the rails.
Having the first of five children when she was just 13, Rachel's life spiralled out of control.
Problems with drugs led to a spell in prison and eventually three of her children were taken into care.
But after the birth of her fourth child Rachel was determined to change her life for the better.
Rachel's way out - music
Music has always been important to Rachel - she grew up listening to reggae music (inspired by her Jamaican parents) and sang in her school choir or at Sunday school when she was young.
She’s only ever had one music lesson in her life and everything else is self taught.
Rachel credits her good singing voice to singing every day and sees music as the saving grace during the hard times in her life.
Will it be enough to land her the 2008 X Factor title?
