Roxanne Pallett left Dales on moral ground
Monday, 12th October 2009.
Former Emmerdale actress Roxanne Pallett has revealed she decided to leave the soap to set an example to battered women across the country.
Pallett's character Jo Sugden suffered domestic abuse in the Yorkshire soap before leaving left the Dales and her husband Andy (played by Kelvin Fletcher) behind .
And Roxanne's revealed the reason behind her leaving the show was for the sake of her character and the plot.
"It was me that said I need to go and leave," she told PA. "And not just for my own sake as an actress before I start becoming repetitive.
"I needed to leave for the character's sake, for the storyline."
"Women across the country were waiting to see what happens to Jo because it was almost like it was their own dialogue as well.
"If she had stayed, what kind of story would that be telling?
"The ending had to be that she left him, to set a positive example."
Trouble sleeping
When she was immersed in the harrowing storyline during 2008, Pallett admitted she had trouble sleeping as she was so deeply involved with the incredibly moving script.
She said: "Jo's problems keep me awake at night. I've embraced this like a second skin.
"But it's an honour to be given such an intense and serious story."
Roxanne added that she has fond memories of her three years in emmerdale, but enjoys the spontaneity of not working on the same project every day.
"I don't like routine and everything being mapped out, she said.
It's as exciting as it is daunting not knowing what my next move will be."
