Jimi Mistry's gaysian surprise
Monday, 12th October 2009.
Ex EastEnders actor Jimi Mistry has admitted his shock that the soap is featuring another storyline about a gay Asian - ten years after he starred in a similar one.
36-year-old Mistry - who played gay Doctor Fred Fonseca in Albert Square in 2000 - said that he was surprised when he first heard of the plot which sees Muslim Syed Masood (Marc Elliot) having a secret relationship with openly gay Christian Clarke (John Partridge).
"It's amazing isn't it?" he said. "It was 10 years ago when we did it, and they're still going down that path.
"We call them 'gaysians', it's like its own genre. They like these parts of being gay and Asian."
"They must think that people have forgotten the last time they did it, so maybe they're just redoing it in a different way.
But not wanting to be hypocritical, the East is East actor added: "I can't really comment though.
"I did my stint and I did see they were going along that road again but it's their choice."
Mistry also played a gay Asian in Touch Of Pink in 2004.
