Is this the end of Jack Duckworth?
Monday, 23rd March 2009.
Coronation Street legend Bill Tarmey has revealed that he he may soon quit playing the iconic Jack Duckworth.
He admitted he is unsure about his long-term future with the soap in which he has featured for almost 30 years, saying that he may soon decide to quit his role for good.
"I don't know when I will decide the time is right to call it a day. It could be one, two, three years' time," the actor told the Daily Star Sunday.
"I am 68 and it depends on how I feel and on my health.
"I would like to spend a bit more time in Tenerife enjoying the warmth. I feel after 40 years in the business I have earned it.
Asked how he would like to be eventually written out of the soap, Tarmey said: "The perfect scenario would be if Bet Lynch turned up and asked Jack to come out to Spain with her and help her run her bar.
"Jack and Bet had a bit on the side so it is totally plausible. I'd want a gentle exit."
He added that the show's producers have left the decision up to him: "At the moment Granada cannot do enough for me."
Blll's on-screen wife Liz Dawn quit the soap in January 2008.
She quit her role as Jack's feisty other half Vera due to ill health.
